Jumpei Arata

Distinguished Professor in Engineering, Kyushu University
Dr. Jumpei Arata is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Kyushu University, Japan, and serves as Chief Technology Officer (CTO) at Megwel Co., Ltd., a start-up company developing hand rehabilitation robots. He received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Tokyo. He studied at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, as both an exchange student (1997–1998) and a Swiss Federal Scholarship recipient (1999–2000). His research in medical robotics began with his doctoral work, specializing in robotic mechanism design. Dr. Arata has proposed numerous innovative mechanisms for human-in-the-loop applications, including rehabilitation robots and surgical robots.
His research interests include surgical robotics, rehabilitation robotics, parallel mechanisms, soft robotics, compliant mechanisms, and haptics. He has been appointed as a Distinguished Lecturer in Surgical Robotics by the IEEE Robotics and Automation Society, and has received 28 academic awards for his achievements.
